CNBC reported on October 22, 2026 that OpenAI is close to raising up to $30 billion led by UAE investors and Coatue. The reported price is lower than the $1.4 trillion floated a month earlier, and nothing is signed.

OpenAI is reportedly close to raising up to $30 billion at a $1.25 trillion pre-money valuation, led by investors from the United Arab Emirates and Coatue, according to CNBC on October 22, 2026. Nothing has been announced, OpenAI declined to comment, and the terms are still moving. This piece is about what is reported, what is not and why the price matters.

We found no quote from OpenAI or the investors in the sources we opened, so there is no pull quote here. The numbers below are attributed to the outlets that reported them.

What CNBC and TechCrunch report

CNBC, citing people familiar with the matter, says the round could reach $30 billion. TechCrunch carried the same story the same day under the line that OpenAI is working on a new raise ahead of an IPO. Key points from CNBC's version:

  • The pre-money valuation is $1.25 trillion, so a full $30 billion would put the post-money figure near $1.28 trillion by simple addition.
  • UAE-based investors and Coatue are expected to lead.
  • The UAE funding could be coupled with a deal to supply more computing capacity for OpenAI in the UAE.
  • Terms are still being negotiated and could change.

If it closes above $1 trillion, CNBC notes, it would be the highest valuation ever for a private company.

The price moved down

The number that stands out is the one that changed. Bloomberg reported a month earlier that OpenAI was seeking $30 billion at a $1.4 trillion valuation. Our earlier report on OpenAI's ask at $1.4 trillion covered that version. The newer reporting puts the pre-money price about $150 billion lower, roughly 11 percent below the earlier figure.

Why might the number drop? The sources do not say, and we will not guess at motives. What we can note is the context: Anthropic reported third-quarter revenue growth slowing to 45 percent, as we covered in our piece on Anthropic's Q3 numbers, and AI chip stocks sold off earlier this month. Whether those moods reached OpenAI's negotiations is an open question.

Where the money has come from

CNBC puts OpenAI's last raise, in March, at $852 billion post-money. The new pre-money figure would be about 47 percent above that, by our arithmetic. CNBC also reports that OpenAI filed confidentially for an IPO in June.

For comparison, CNBC reports that Anthropic raised $65 billion at a $965 billion valuation in May, filed confidentially for an IPO in June and is seeking a $1.5 trillion to $2 trillion valuation for a public debut. Our frontier lab valuations tracker keeps those figures dated in one place.

The UAE and compute

The most consequential line may be the least detailed. CNBC says the UAE funding could be tied to a deal for more compute capacity for OpenAI in the UAE. If that happens, the round would be both a financing and an infrastructure agreement, with the investor also supplying the physical capacity.

That structure is increasingly common in the race, where capital, chips, power and customers blur together. It also concentrates policy questions, since the location of frontier compute and the source of its funding are matters for export-control and national-security reviewers. None of the sources we opened describe any such review of this deal.

What a bridge to an IPO means

Reports describe the raise as a bridge toward a public offering. A bridge round funds the company until it can list, and it sets a price reference point for the listing. A lower reference point can make the eventual listing easier to justify, and a higher one makes it harder. We are not predicting any outcome here; we are noting why the exact figure gets scrutinized.

What we do not know

  • Whether the round is signed. The sources report that terms are under negotiation.
  • The final size, which is "up to" $30 billion.
  • The investor list beyond the lead names.
  • Whether the compute tie-in is part of the same document.
  • How the pricing compares to OpenAI's revenue, which none of these reports state.

What else the reporting adds

AI Weekly, summarizing CNBC and TechCrunch, adds several details. In early October OpenAI had pitched a $1.4 trillion pre-money valuation to backers including BlackRock and the UAE fund MGX, so the reported ask has fallen by roughly $150 billion. TechCrunch describes the round as an opportunistic bridge ahead of a potential 2027 IPO, and says talks began after investors approached OpenAI in September. OpenAI told investors it was aiming to secure signatures by the end of next week, and, per AI Weekly and Finimize, that it plans to spend $600 billion on compute by 2030. AI Weekly also cites SiliconANGLE as reporting that the IPO slipped from 2026 to 2027 and that Anthropic is targeting a Thanksgiving-window listing at $1.5 trillion to $2.5 trillion. Those are secondhand figures, and CNBC's own range for Anthropic is $1.5 trillion to $2 trillion, so treat the upper end with care.

The pattern across both labs is the same: private rounds are getting larger as public listings approach, and the compute commitments behind them are measured in hundreds of billions of dollars.

Our position

This is a story about a negotiation, and negotiations change. The responsible reading is a range: a raise of up to $30 billion, at a pre-money price somewhere around $1.25 trillion, led by UAE money and Coatue, unsigned. We will update when OpenAI confirms, when a filing appears or when the final size is known. Nothing here is investment advice.
